In the springtime a girl’s thoughts turn to farmers markets, new handbags, and outdoor happy hours (in the autumn they turn to apple picking, boots, and bars with fireplaces, just so you know). So naturally I decided to add happy hours to the Five Good Places in Connecticut series. Let’s start with West Hartford.
My ideal happy hour is at the bar of a nice restaurant that offers reduced drink prices, and a stripped-down menu featuring smaller bites. This is perfect for a girl on a budget like me, and I particularly love Max’s Oyster Bar for this; you get to sample some of their classic dishes in smaller portions and sit at their beautiful bar. Happy hour is always a good bet for a restaurant too, because patrons invariably stay past the cut off time and continue to eat and drink. Win-win.

While there are many options for happy hour in West Hartford, I’ve only included ones that were verifiable in writing, so if a restaurant or bar’s happy hour existence was not explicitly stated on their website or Facebook page, it didn’t make the cut. For instance, I heard rumblings of a happy hour at Cuvee, but found nothing about it on their website, and I know for a fact that Rizzuto’s offers a free happy hour spread (literally, plates and plates in a buffet of free food), but again, I couldn’t find a mention of this on their website. I’m a stickler like that, but I’m also a rule-breaker because I included 6 venues instead of 5. Maybe next post will be about word-of-mouth happy hours, but this post is for the ones that are proudly proclaimed on the establishment’s website.
Do you have a favorite happy hour spot in your town? Suggest it in the comments and I’ll include it in another post.
The series Five Good Places started because I kept finding myself in unfamiliar towns and villages and wondering where to eat. I didn’t want Subway or McDonalad’s, I wanted something unique and special, so I decided to do a little research ahead of time and am continually compiling dining guides for towns and regions. Peruse them all: Five Good Places. You can also suggest a good place by emailing me, or leaving a comment below.
