Postcard from Caseus in New Haven, CT

Some people travel far and wide to find a restaurant dedicated to cheese. In Connecticut, we only have to go so far as New Haven to visit one of the most famous restaurants celebrating everyone’s favorite dairy product: Caseus. I had a rarified experience at the restaurant because I was there as a guest on Bruce Barber’s “Real Life Survival Guide,” as was Caseus’ “big cheese” Jason Sobocinski. You can listen to the show here: Bruce Barber’s Real Life Survival Guide.

We dug into the cheeseboard during the taping, and then I stayed for dinner with my mom after we wrapped. (I’m pretty sure I’m the only guest in the history of the show who’s brought their mom to a taping, but that’s just how the Larkins roll.) I like to order nightly specials at most restaurants, assuming the chef chose those dishes because they’re seasonal and something he or she enjoys preparing. I was thrilled that lamb was that night’s featured burger as I’d been craving lamb – something about Spring — and I can’t resist a burger special. We split that with an order of their famous mac & cheese (pictures below). Both were fittingly decadent. Next trip: mussels and grilled cheese.

PS: I took these pictures with an old Nikon Coolpix rather than my usual Canon DSLR. Thanks to the lighting in Caseus, I think they came out pretty good for a little point-and-shoot.

One of my top five or so favorite restaurants in the state.

This would totally be my go-to restaurant in New Haven, but the friend I usually meet for dinner in this area hates cheese (for shame!). I’m going to make a point to go at least once a season from now on!

That might be one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard!
