Travel Times

* Even though I am not a working mom, I found this post on CT Working Moms very interesting. Do people factor in the cost of re-entering the work force when calculating if they can afford to stay home or go back to work?

* Johnna did a lovely post about our day in Stonington Borough.

* I was a guest on The Colin McEnroe Show talking about procrastination and how to beat it. Here are my 5 Tips to Beat Procrastination.

* This post from Leeane about Summer Cocktail Inspirations got me thinking I should come up with my own signature cocktail for the summer. I want something fruity, but not cloyingly sweet. I found this Boozy Watermelon Rosemary Lemonade, which sounded great until I read that it calls for 3/4 cup of sugar. Now I’m on the hunt for something I can whip up with fruit, either vodka or rum, and minimal amounts of sugar. Any ideas?

Day Trip to Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington

2012-06 Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington - 02

Here’s the thing with photography: the more you study it, and the more you learn, the more apt you are to go through a phase when you are not happy with your photographs. When I first got my DSLR, I was thrilled with the instant improvement in quality from my point-and-shoot, but just like with music, cooking, or writing, the more I know, the harder I am to please. So as I was loading these pictures into my computer, after a wonderful day in the Stonington area with Johnna author of The Size of Connecticut, I was not thrilled with the picture of the Amtrak train racing by the vineyard, or the lack of clear, in-focus picture of Saltwater’s main building, which is an old airplane hanger.  ”NONE OF THESE PICTURES ARE GOOD ENOUGH!” I yelled, literally, to myself in my basement home office.

This was my first time shooting in manual mode, which is pretty much exactly like taking the training wheels off your bike. I’ll get better, but on some level, I felt like I didn’t do this gorgeous winery justice. So instead of relying on pictures, I will tell you this about Saltwater Farm: If you’re planning a wedding in “Mystic Country,” you should get married there because it’s an amazing location right on the water with a wonderful farm-and-sea feel. I really liked their rose, and, finally, they have adirondack chairs, which are my preferred summer seating vessels.

Some Kind of Blue Weekend

Noah's in Stonington, CT
Noah’s , 113 Water Street, Stonington, CT

Today was a daytripping day. I started in Pomfret and took 395 down to Stonington, where I promptly got stuck behind a very slow moving tractor while an angry guy in a fancy convertible corvette tailgated me.

Last October we got stuck in the exact same place for “leaf peeping” traffic, and there are now so many vineyards popping up in this area, I would not be surprised if winery traffic happens shortly. Only in Eastern Connecticut, kids!

Farmers Markets Near Danbury, CT

Farmers Market Near Danbury CT

Of all the places in the state, the Danbury area has gotten the least amount of love from Connecticut Day Trips, a situation I plan to rectify right now. Today is the first in a series of posts on Farmers Markets in Connecticut, and rather than list them alphabetically, I’m going to go through the different regions to highlight markets, starting with the fair city of Danbury, CT. These markets may not be directly in the city-proper, but they are close enough that if you’re day tripping in the area, you can certainly stop by and sample some of the local goods.

Postcard from Plan B Burger Bar in Glastonbury

Plan B Burger Bar in Glastonbury, CT - 5

I rather eat a hamburger than a steak (seriously),  so I was surprised to discover last week that I had not written about any of the many, many burger places that have popped up in greater Hartford over the past few years.  I can’t name a favorite yet because I haven’t been to all of them, but I will say that if you like your burger cooked well done, Plan B is a good call. Their cooking method keeps even the wellest done burger from being too dry and tough. Also, their french fries rock. This made it the perfect place to take my dad for a Father’s Day outing that included a ride on the Rocky Hill / Glastonbury Ferry, a stop at a car dealership, and a drive bye of Home Depot. That man likes his cars and tools, and he likes his burgers well done.
