As soon as May came and temperatures rose we started a weekly Wednesday night tradition of walking to downtown Hartford from Mike’s condo in Asylum Hill–he lives a block from the Mark Twain House–to partake in one of the best happy hour deals on the planet: $1 beers at the Pig’s Eye Pub. We have our beer, and then we walk over to Agave and split table-side guacamole and a grilled vegetables-and-taco entree.
I feel like I’m coming out of the closet a bit here because as much as I enjoy this ritual, I’m always slightly embarrassed by it. In order to participate in the $1 draft deal, you need to purchase (for $5) a humungous, slightly sinister-looking beer glass. Each week we take our glasses home, wash them, and bring them back. Is the secret shame of traveling with your own drink-ware (well after you’ve graduated from college) worth it?
I say, yes, for the view of the city from the rooftop deck, the joy of being outside with music on warm nights, and the unbeatable price.
