
I could say that I didn’t take too many pictures in Litchfield because I wanted you to experience it in person, for yourself, but the fact is I just wanted to walk around and window shop. Like Stonington and Essex, Litchfield is the kind of town to just park your car and take a walk around. I love all three of these towns so much for that reason, and because each is a great jumping off point for a day trip.

Mother Nature, you are a real nut job. As nutty as the person who designed the Asylum Ave-Capitol Ave-91 interchange stretch on 84 East in Hartford. You are approaching Donald Trump levels of crazy. You’re that much of a jerk right now. After trying to wash away much of the tri-state last week, you pelted us with snow as soon as we started to slowly recover.

The best place to wait out a major hurricane, freak snow storm, or other natural catastrophe is–by far–a city. Mike and I remained blithely unaware of the doom inflicted on Greater Hartford for a full 24 hours after 2011′s “Snocktober” storm because we were in Hartford.

We thought On the Green in Litchfield might be a tourist trap: convenient location right on the Town Green, parking close by, outdoor seating, friendly staff. Check, check, check and check–all of the signs that usually signal to me a sub-par dining experience. I don’t know why I always assume the most convenient location is another way of saying “the food sucks.” On the Green turned out to be both the path of least resistance, and a really nice place to eat.

New Preston, Connecticut is actually called New Preston Marble Dale and it’s part of the town of Washington, Connecticut. Yes, I’m confused, too. Washington was the inspiration for the setting of the TV show “Gilmore Girls.” The show’s creators took a trip to Connecticut while renovating their home to inspect the wallpaper in the Mark Twain House in Hartford, and stayed in Washington Depot while in the State. I believe they stayed at the Mayflower Inn, and I really can’t believe this is my first-ever reference to that show on this blog (and neither can anyone that knows me personally). I was a huge fan, and I probably should have waited until I actually visit Washington to drop my “Gilmore” knowledge on you.
