The Griswold Inn in Essex, CT (map)
With a wood-burning stove, house band, and happy hour specials like complimentary appetizers and half price tap room cocktails, a trip to “the Gris” just might be the best way to spend a wintery Friday afternoon.
When Sarah and I visited, we began with a stroll down Main Street and trips into shops like the French Hen and the Griswold Inn’s own Goods and Curiosities before claiming a table in the tap room and ordering way too much food: two glasses of Guinness, a plate of homemade potato chips, a cobb salad, two bowls of clam chowder, and fish and chips to split. Bring your mom, bring a group of girlfriends, or make it a romantic winter afternoon.
DAY TRIP ITINERARY: The Griswold Inn in Essex, CT
Each day trip itinerary includes the main event, plus suggestions — with names, addresses and maps — of places to eat, shop, or “notable neighbors” to check out while you’re in the area. There is baked-in flexibility to mix and match, or follow the itinerary to the letter. If you have suggestions, lemme know!
Recommended: We visited on a Friday afternoon around 3:30p.m., and by the time we left (close to 5:00p.m.), the tap room was starting to fill up. If you plan to sit, you may have to wait for a table. It’s worth the wait! If you plan to eat in the dining room, I strongly recommend reservations a few weeks in advance.
