Poached eggs, home fries, and toast at Wally’s American Grill, Killington, VT (map)
People have strong feelings about toast, as witnessed this past Monday when Colin McEnore hosted an entire radio show (“A Toast to Toast“) on the subject. People came out of the woodwork to talk about how much they love toast, and exactly what they like to smear on it:
- Pumpernickel with peanut butter and jelly
- White with cinnamon and sugar
- Sourdough with plain butter
- Whole wheat with Nutella
- Cinnamon-raison swirl with cream cheese
Honey, sea salt, raspberry preserves–my friend Michelle raves about Fornax bread with butter, strawberry jam and rosemary. I told Colin that, just in time for the show, I had eaten the best toast of my toast-eating career over the weekend, at Wally’s in Killington.
I think I’m fairly qualified to judge toast because every time I order breakfast out, I get the same thing: two poached eggs, home fries and well-done whole wheat toast with butter. I make a point to order it well-done because most restaurants seem to skip the actual “toasting” part, and I dont want to end up with two limp pieces of bread that graced the toaster oven for uner 15 seconds. I want real toast, actually toasted. And if I order it with butter, the kitchen will put more buttery goodness on that toast than I would ever dare. What’s your favorite way to eat toast?
