Postcard from 85 Main in Putnam, CT

85 Main in Putnam, CT - 9The BBQ plate from 85 Main in Putnam, CT

Putnam, CT is one of those old New England cities where time seems to stand still. There’s a Montgomery Ward sign still up, and the old Providence & Worcester Railroad train stop remains intact (although no longer carrying passengers). The only modernity within site are the restaurants and wine bars that dot the downtown. 85 Main has both sushi and BBQ on their menu–two things not readily available when the old P&W was busy carrying New Englanders across Connecticut from Massachusetts to Rhode Island and back again–making it a refreshing stop for drinks, snacks, or a meal when antiquing around town. You can sit outside on their deck and stare out at old-timey shops while eating very in-the-moment food combinations (we split the BBQ plate, sushi, beet and goat cheese salad with margaritas). It’s a strange and wonderful juxtaposition. More food and view pictures below.
